Art in Context: French Impressionism

Your initial post is show your grasp of the information conveyed in this lecture; it is due Thursday by 11:59 pm. Your reply to one other student’s post is to be substantive and follow Netiquette guidelines; it is due by 11:59 pm Saturday. To begin writing your answers to these Discussion questions and prompts, click on Reply below them. It is very helpful to also look at the images in “Staley Art 151 online Week Nine Artworks.” Email me, if you have questions about the way to do this.

The goal of this Discussion response is for you to analyze the ways that the focus work of art is a creative, visual embodiment of the cultural context in which it was made.
You have learned a lot by this point in the term. As you write your Discussion, imagine that you are teaching a person who is clueless, but curious, about French Impressionism. In order to help them learn about it, try to explain the information in an accurate, thorough, and clear manner.
This week, you are to demonstrate your knowledge by addressing the questions and prompts below.
You will be graded on your understanding of only the content of the lecture and possibly videos, websites, books etc. that I clearly state that you are to use as part of your answer in the lecture or post in Canvas for this week. Do not confuse this with my suggestion that you look at a video or website, etc. Do not use outside sources otherwise and do not plagiarize, as these have negative consequences for your grade and perhaps your academic career. You are above needing to do either of these.
Write accurate, thorough, and concrete responses using complete sentences, rather than bullet points, lists, etc. Please use the terminology that we learned about in this week’s lectures.
1 Identify the artists, titles, general dates, and stylistic period of the artworks that are the focus works for this week.
2 Name the guiding idea/value for that time, as stated in the lecture.
3 State the French term for painting in the out of doors and discuss your favorite work from this week in terms of two formal qualities that show evidence of this approach. Be sure to describe what you see in the given formal quality and then analyze the effect that it creates.
4 Identify the main subject of Impressionism in the first years of this style. Analyze one of the artworks that features this subject and consider two ways that it alludes to the guiding value of this time.
5 Next, focus on Monet’s artistic development. Thoroughly describe the two key events that led him to develop his personal style in a distinctive manner. Provide the name of these later images collectively.
6 Discuss Monet’s specific artistic approach to investigating the nature of change in these later paintings. What exactly did he do, beginning with the images of the train station? Which dimension did he strive to show in his paintings?
7 Accurately and thoroughly consider the paradox of Impressionism in the three ways we learned about this week.
