POL 360 International Political Economy

Instructions

In POL 360 International Political Economy Op-ed assignment #1 DUE: 5:00 PM, September 25th via D2L. Topic: Assess Trump’s arguments about national security and trade. Is he doing the right thing by raising tariffs?

Background: Trump recently argued that his tariffs on steel are in the best interests of America’s national security. This is departure from his previous rhetoric, which focused on protecting US jobs and halting the decline of American manufacturing. It’s also a departure from the strategy of previous presidents.

National security provisions are included in all US trade agreements – the WTO, NAFTA, etc. – but they are never invoked. Trump’s tariffs met with derision from many economists. Critics argue that the national security logic holds no water. Rather, it’s a thinly veiled excuse to raise tariffs.

Assignment: Read Trump’s statements and the many reactions to him. There is a huge amount of material online regarding this issue. Just read enough to see what folks are saying. Once you’ve covered the background, develop an argument about whether you think Trump is right. Focus specifically on his claims about national security.

Do tariffs help secure America? Why or why not? Write your argument in 1,000-1,200 words. Make your argument clear and concise. Include a straightforward thesis statement.

It’s OK to just take one side on the issue. Support your position with examples. Requirements: Be clear and simple in your language. Use active voice. ‘Hot link’ to sources when making your claims.

Draw from examples and evidence to support your argument. Some good resources on op-ed writing are available here: “How to write an op-ed or column” from Harvard’s Shorenstein Center “How to Write an Op-Ed Article” from Carleton University Note: Remember that this assignment is 1,000-1,200 words. Papers outside the word length will be penalized 10%. If you include a bibliography, that does not count toward the word length. Papers are due on Sept 25th by 5 PM via D2L. Late papers are marked down 10% each day after
