You will conduct a 12-15 minute (no more than 15 minutes!!) Semi-Structured Interview with someone who has a career position that may of interest to you.  Your interview participant should be someone who does paid work full-time, is in a career-path job, and is willing to tell you about their job as well as their path to that position.

The Research Question is: What is an example of the experiences and pathway that led someone to a specific career job, what does that job entail, and what is it like to do that job?

You should submit the following

  1. Your Interview Guide – i.e., what questions will you want to ask the person to understand what they do, why they chose the career/job path they are on, and what steps (education, experience, etc.) got them to their current position.  The guide should contain 10-12 questions. (5 marks)

As well: although you do not need to hand the notes in, practice taking good notes when you carry out the interview.

  1. Your completed Consent Form (starting with the Sample Consent Form provided in Week 10 of Resources and revising it for your interview). (5 marks)

  1. A 500-600 word Analysis of your experience with interviewing.  State whether you have done other interviews, first of all.  Then, discuss what challenges you faced in formulating the Interview Guide and conducting the interview? Referring specifically to the ideas in Bell, et al., chapter 11, what were some of the strengths of your interview? Some of the weaknesses of your interview? Finally, and very briefly, what did you learn about the career path you were interviewing about? (10 marks)
