ENGL 2327, American Literature I Robinson, Fall 2014 Paper #1 Write a well-developed paper of 4 to 6 typed pages in response to one of the following topics:

1. Define some of the basic concepts of Puritan thought and culture. Compare how these concepts operate in the works of two Puritan authors we have discussed.

2. Analyze how Anne Bradstreet expresses her frustrations with her Puritan world through her poetry.

3. Consider how John Smith and William Bradford or Jonathan Edwards and Benjamin Franklin are contrasting contemporaries. Support your argument with references to the writings of these figures.

4. Compare the visions for America of John Smith, John Winthrop, and St. Jean de Crèvecoeur. Do any of these visions seem compatible with the America of today?

5. Many early American writers struggle with the concept of slavery. Discuss how the subject is treated by the various authors who address this subject.

6. Define the Age of Enlightenment. Then discuss how two of the following are representative figures of the age: Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, or Thomas Jefferson. Requirements The focus of the student’s paper, regardless of the topic selected, should be the authors’ primary texts. Do not delve deeply into the authors’ lives; center the analysis on the text itself. Your introductory paragraph should include the full name of the authors to be analyzed and should present an explicit, clearly worded thesis that directs the argument. Body paragraphs should have clear topic sentences, and transitions should be used where they improve the coherence of the paper. The paper must be written in a formal mode, employing appropriate diction and standard grammar. There should be no use of the first person pronouns “I” or “we” and no use of the second person pronoun “you.” Avoid the use of contractions, clichés, the phrase “a lot,” and the adverb “very.” Two secondary sources are required in addition to the primary texts. MLA style must be followed for the paper’s general format (page numbering, margins, heading, title, line-spacing), for in-text citations of quotations or paraphrases, and for the Works Cited page. (See the MLA Handbook, 7th ed.) The font should be Times New Roman in 12-point type. Due Wednesday, October 15, at the beginning of class.
