The easiest way to describe the difference between a corporation and a conglomerate is looking at a corporation as one company and a conglomerate is many corporations or companies rolled into one making a mega corporation. An example of a conglomerate is Coca Cola, Coca Cola also owns companies that make Powerade and Monster drinks. They may be their own company but they fall under Coca Cola.

Considering the ethics of media conglomerate in the United States, there are many advantages and disadvantages of allowing large conglomerates to control the mass media. “Once a country which had fifty major media companies in 1983, America now, has only nine important multinational media conglomerates, some of which include Walt Disney, Time Warner, Comcast, News Corp., CBS and Viacom.” (Solanki, 2016, Para 4) Some of the advantages include are viewers are provided with what they want to watch, so anything that is popular is kept and anything unpopular gets thrown out. Another advantage is that the government has minimal control, which means the viewers make the choice on what they want to watch. Some of the disadvantages include the lack of competing viewpoints and perspectives. “One of the biggest fears in the minds of those opposing media consolidation is that the large media houses will silence alternative views, which can then lead to a decline in democratic viewpoints.” (Solanki, 2013, Para 12) Another disadvantage is the conglomerates focus on advertisers. “The commercially driven media is loyal to their sponsors and advertisers, not their viewers.” (Solanki, 2013, Para 15)

As far as knowing or finding an alternative way the media might be organized that would be more ethical or moral, I do not know if it can be reorganized. Mass media has organized into nine important multinational conglomerates and it seems to be working fine in my opinion.
