Discuss Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).

Question Description

Only check the grammar.

I write this letter for the concern about the potential brain injury in UFC fighters. There are many concussions happening in a single mixed martial art fight match that both fighters will get many hits on their heads. More than that, the knockout rule will make those fighters lose their conscious in a short period. UFC fighters’ brains are damaged in every concussion and they will have risk to have long-term brain injuries, such as dementia and memory loss. Also, they will have more chance to get Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is progressive neuro-degenerative disease, like Alzheimer disease, found in people who have repetitive brain trauma. Patients in CTE will have some symptoms, including aggression, confusion and impaired judgement. Because of repetitive brain trauma, the behavior and look of a protein called tau are changed. In CTE, tau protein will spread throughout the brain and kill the brain cells. Finally, the tau protein hugely affects the brain and brings problems around memory, agitation and anger. Therefore, UFC fighters have the right to know the long-term effects of concussions.

Importantly, we need to educate the UFC fighters about the long-term effects of concussions. Some athletes feel glory when they get hits and they don’t have conscious to protect themselves from the long-term effects. However, the long-term effects of concussions hugely influence the future of UFC fighters. When those fighters retire from the UFC, they no longer can earn money from the match and they need to have a normal life. If they are in thinking and memory problem brought by concussions, they will easily lose everything and have a miserable life. We need to inform them and help them to avoid the potential risk.
