Point of View Essay – “A Rose for Emily”

Instructions

T​‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌​he essay must consist of five paragraphs. The requirements for each paragraph are included below.

Each support paragraph has to begin with a topic statement, followed by a claim before the quote, and quotes must be smoothly integrated into the paragraphs. Analysis of the quote has to follow after the quote. The essay also needs to be in third person. Citing isn’t necessary.

The story itself and its sections can be found here. https://xroads.virginia.edu/~drbr/wf_rose.html Paragraph 1: Intro to the paper. Include a brief summary of the main details of the story (no more than four or five sentences), then offer a thesis statement that includes the purpose of the essay.

Paragraph 2: Identify and the narrator and offer proof (1 quote needed for support). Briefly explain that because they have a vested interested in the preservation of Emily’s good name, they are unreliable​‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌​.

Also explain how her reputation is connected to the old southern town in order to establish their interest in Emily’s reputation (two different quotes needed for support).

Paragraph 3: Discuss how the town has a history of caring for and excusing Emily’s behavior, thereby preserving her good name. All examples from this paragraph must come from sections I & II of the story (3 different quotes/examples needed for support). Paragraph 4: Discuss how the town appears to cover up Emily’s ill-deeds and refuses to divulge any questionable goings on in her life in order to preserve her good name. All examples from this paragraph must come from sections III, IV, and V of the story (at least 3 different quotes/examples needed for support). Paragraph 5: The conclusion should summarize what’s discussed in the essay. Don’t bring up new information or offer new ideas of analysis​‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌​.
