The French Revolution of 1789 constituted a major step in the articulation of human rights, taking some of its inspiration from Enlightenment thinkers such as Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau and others. Indeed, the articulation of rights was part of the process of state and nation building. The rights set forth in documents such as the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen continue to shape democracies all over Europe and the world. Yet the process of putting rights into practice proved uneven and contradictory, both during the Revolution and afterwards. Discuss this issue in an essay of between 5-6 pages, drawing on your texts (The Making of the West and Sources of the Making of the West) and lectures.

We will discuss appropriate citation practice. Remember to provide citations to the specific documents in Sources(as opposed to simply a page number –i.e. John Locke, Second Treatise of Government, p. x in Lualdi, Sources of the Making of the West). In text citations are OK.
