1.) Thomas Jefferson and many of his generation viewed slavery as a “necessary evil.” But after the influence of the Second Great Awakening in the 1810s-1830s, slaveholders changed the way in which they defended slavery; why and how (what kinds of arguments did they make) did they do this?

2.) How, specifically, did Frederick Douglass’ narrative contest the slaveholders’ new defense of slavery that developed in the 1830s? Briefly explain the defense (see above), but focus most of your answer for this question on how he argues against it. Provide specific examples from Douglass’ Narrative.

3.) How, according to Harriet Martineau, did the institution of slavery harm white Americans, and why did she emphasize this in her essay? Remember to support your answer with specific details from her writings.

4.) What did Douglass observe about free life in Massachusetts—in contrast to slavery in Maryland—and why do you think he included these specific observations in his book? Provide specific examples from Douglass’ Narrative.
