Do ethical questions point to the supernatural?

Description

. 2 page minimum, 12 pt Times New Roman font with 1 page margins.

If you’re wondering “What issues should I be looking at?”, here’s a quick guide to what we’ve covered this semester. Obviously I’d like you talk about what’s below in greater depth:

  • Wittgenstein: Do ethical questions point to the supernatural? How does language work, and what do words like “meaning” mean?
  • Plato: What to make of Socrates? How does “the unexamined life is not worth living” link with investigation of the natural world? Could Socrates teach justice, or did he simply talk about it?
  • Aristotle: How does Aristotle’s definition of political rule–to be able to rule, and rule in turn–compare with how we train leaders? Do the “rational animal,” the “political animal,” as definitions of man continue Plato’s thought?
  • Augustine: How does Augustine’s self-examination compare with Socrates? What does the incident about the pear tree tell us about Augustine’s conception of good and evil?
  • Machiavelli: Why does Machiavelli speak about fear and love and property? How is his thought different from Plato, Aristotle, and Augustine? What does he tell us about the world he lives in, and how does he respond to that world?
  • Descartes: What is Descartes’ method of self-examination? Why is it important to him, and what themes does it also bring into play?
  • Kant: What does Kant argue in “What is Enlightenment?” Does it help promote science and democracy?
