Flood Management

Flood Management
Introduction
Floods are part of nature, have existed in the past and will continue existing in the future.
Except for some of the floods caused by a failure of dams to hold water or landslides, floods are
climatological events influenced by geomorphology, relief, and soil and vegetation cover.
Society has become vulnerable to flood hazards due to the inadequate knowledge of management
strategies as well as ignorance of carrying out an intensive weather forecast. Although floods are
natural events, human activities that tend to interfere with the ecosystem are attributed to
contributing significantly to the negative impacts of floods. Flood management is a
comprehensive strategy aimed at reducing the effects of disasters through the adoption of various
approaches (Chitsaz & Banihabib, 2015). The paper seeks to describe the causes and
consequences of the floods as well as mechanisms that can be employed when managing the
floods to ensure that the impacts are of low magnitude.
Causes of Floods
Although people will always have an idea of when the floods will occur after conducting
an extensive weather forecast, nobody can be sure of the area that is likely to experience floods
or the exact damage that is likely to happen. Floods are an overabundance of water in a land that
is usually dry; thus meaning that floods result from large amounts of water coming from other
places (Oulahen, 2015). Although water may seem benign, huge quantities can have significant
implications in damaging property, diseases, and famine. Floods are caused by different factors
that are both natural and humanmade.
Most regions across the globe receive rainfall yearly with heavy rain being experienced
in peak rainy seasons. Some of the rain is absorbed by the ground where it proceeds to form
