Formative proposal: Podcast/video (20%)

Record (audio or video) a research proposal (maximum of 5 minutes) for conducting a literature review on one of the themes listed below.

  1. Captology/persuasive technologies
  2. Political ideologies and technology
  3. Surveillance and privacy
  4. Online hate
  5. Disinformation
  6. Web 3.0
  7. Technology and social justice
  8. Post-humanism

You can choose any context you want, once the focus is on one of the themes listed above. The overall objective of the proposal is to identify a particular area (contextual and/or theoretical) within these themes and justify a more comprehensive literature review for the follow-up assignment.

It might help if you ask yourself the following questions as they correspond to the headings that will be used in grading your proposal.

  • Have I made convincing arguments for further review of literature in this area? Why is it a relevant area? What are the potential benefits of further researching it?
  • Have I linked my arguments to lecture/tutorial material, reading list material and the forum discussions with my fellow students?
  • Have I outlined a clear structure and framework that can potentially be elaborated upon in the final submission?
  • Is there evidence of critical thinking? Have I demonstrated an ability to bring together relevant information and go beyond merely describing it?
  • Have I identified relevant stakeholders who this proposal and its final submission would be of interest to?
  • Have I structured the content in a way that guides the reader and addresses the key points that I want to make?
  • Have I made my case for further research in an engaging way, utilisng the advantages that come with using audio/visual communication? Have I demonstrated creative skills in presenting my case?
  • Have I attached a supporting references document (if using audio) or shown a list of references at the end of my recording (if using video)?

Researching your topic:

I’d like you to think through your topic in light of what you have learned from the lectures/tutorials (live and recorded) and forum discussions but also through the readings you find yourself. The ability to find relevant and interesting content is one of the key skills that is assessed here. Emphasis should be placed on using material from peer-reviewed articles in academic journals and high quality case studies in order to explore the theoretical underpinnings of the topic that you explore. Projects based solely on simplistic Google searches and/or Wikipedia will most likely fail. Please note that a further attachment of references needs to be uploaded if using audio, or a bibliography should be shown if using a video.

Home

Projects should be no longer than 5 minutes. Please be aware that the 5 minutes is not a target to hit, but the maximum amount of time you can use. Emphasis should be placed on quality rather than quantity (more killer, less filler!). You will lose marks for needless waffle so take care in editing the work. The time count is purposefully low to get you to think about what is really important for this proposal so editing is key. Take the opportunity to be as creative as possible in how you deliver your arguments.

Medium and technical support:

  • I would recommend using Zoom to record audio/video. You can easily screenshare images, video clips etc. However, you are free to use whatever app works best for you.
  • iMovie is available on most iPhones and FilmoraGo can be downloaded for free for Android phones if edits are required.
  • If you require technical support, or access to any recording resources, please contact our teaching assistant Doherty@DCU.ie
  • Furthermore, please be aware that there is a dedicated forum set up on Loop for students to ask questions and share tips on anything assessment related.

Submission:

* Audio/video are to be uploaded on Loop under the ‘formative essay proposal’ submission link by Saturday 29/10/22 5pm. **Any evidence of plagiarism will be dealt with according to the procedures in your student handbook.
