Government Over-reach” vs. “Responsible Government”

Textbook Readings

  • Barton: ch. 5
  • Danoff & Hebert: chs. 5–6
  • Higgs: chs. 1–5

Overview

In this module/week, you will begin to learn how government has continually grown in size, scope, and power during the past century.  Governments have responded to real or imagined crises, including economic difficulties, wars, domestic strife, and “power bases” at all levels.  Some have called this expansion “government over-reach” while others have called it “responsible government.”  In the end, the ever-increasing government power endures long after each crisis has passed, impinging on both civil and economic liberties and fostering extensive corporate welfare.  The “Crisis under the Old Regime” fueled this rapid growth, expansion, and influence of government, beginning in 1893.
