Gun control is meant to prevent and restrict ownership and use of guns mainly firearms. Gun regulator is strict and unquestionable in most developed countries while in others, it remains a political issue which is a pity to those who view it as a necessity for public safety against those who regards it dangerous breach of personal freedom. Unlike other parts of the world gun control is more controversial in the United States, where ownership of guns is protected constitutionally yet   murders including mass shootings are extremely high.  Supporters of increased gun control claims that limiting access to firearms will help reduce crimes and save lives whereas the opponents insist that gun will help the law-abiding citizens defend themselves against armed criminals. Recent survey shows that a high percentage of registered voters in the U.S supported gun control after the recent mass shootings unlike earlier years.  Therefore, gun control is necessary to reduce crimes and save lives.

There has been a debate on gun control in the United States which gives the concerns in the appropriate interpretation of the second amendment of the constitution. In the early 21st century the court had interpreted it to guarantee the right of individuals to keep arms or right of states to maintain mercenaries however, in 1939 the court stated that second amendment did not prohibit laws demanding the registration of sawed-off shotguns, because there was no proper relationship of the weapons regarding the maintenance of militia. In 2008 for the first time the supreme court recognized individual use of firearms for traditionally lawful purposes like self-defense independent from service in state of militia. The adjustment was applicable against local and state gun-control laws   which the interpretation was held by the court two years later was against the federal statutes as well.

Mass shootings are so frequent in the United States where majority are not even mentioned in media channels those that gain national attention happen to be massive or monstrous including the Orlando murder 2016 where 49 people died, in 2012 the massacre of 6 adults and 20 children in Newtown at an elementary school. This has led to shot lived and fruitless debates on the necessity for firmer gun control. There is fear of retaliation from the National Rifle Association (NRA) by politicians from both major parties. They offer prayers to the families affected but refuse to enact on sensible and constitutional measures seen ideal by majority group of the Americans, such as the lapse allowed by the Congress in 2004 to expand background checks for gun purchase, restoration of federal ban on assault weapons and ensuring individuals with mental related problems do not get hold of arms.
