How has technology impacted television programming from 1970s to the present in terms of viewing practices and narrative complexity.

Question Description

Please pick any two of the questions below to answer in a formal essay of no more than 4 pages each (including work cited page). The essay should include academic references and works cited page. Each essay must have a thesis statement, supporting evidence (textual analysis and quotes from academic/critical articles) and a conclusions. Other requirements are 1” Margins, 12 pt. Times New Roman and label each essay with the chosen question at the top of the page.

  1. Relate 2nd-4th wave Feminism with three series from 3 different era. (Not limited to shows screened in class). Be sure to socio-historically contextualize each series and each wave.
  2. How has technology impacted television programming from 1970s to the present in terms of viewing practices and narrative complexity. Give specific examples of the technology and the programming.
  3. How do notions of quality change from the 1980s to the present. Please incorporate technological advancements, aesthetic and narrative development, as well as key elements of quality.
  4. How do representations of race and/or ethnicity and/or gender and/or sexual orientation often impact both the encoding and decoding of specific programs? Please discuss specific programs dealing with at least two areas of representation.
  5. Do elements of the three Cs still exist in the era of Quality TV. Give at least one example for each C.
  6. The essay should include academic references and works cited page. Times New Roman (or comparable) and label each essay with the chosen question at the top of the page.
  7. The take home test consists of two short essays (double spaced, 12 pt. font, 1″ margins). Each essay should respond to a different prompt and should not exceed four pages, which includes your works cited page. Please note the four page maximum means TA’s will not read past the fourth page of each essay so keep that in mind as you are drafting and editing your essays. Each essay must include at least 1 academic sources (although 2 would be preferable): cite articles and lectures you are drawing from in your papers. Remember you can use sources from your short paper or class readings.
