Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the body fails to produce enough thyroid
hormones. It is also known as an underactive thyroid. The condition is more prevalent in women
than in men. Thyroid hormones are produced in the thyroid gland (MedlinePlus, 2021). The
hormones are responsible for the regulation and usage of body energy and control various
functions such as how the digestive system works and the regular rhythm of the heart. The signs
and symptoms of hypothyroidism vary from one person to another. Moreover, identifying the
symptoms sometimes can be a challenge. Early symptoms of the condition include fatigue and
weight gain. Common symptoms of the condition include constipation, depression, slow heart
rate, increased blood cholesterol, dry skin, puffy face, menstrual changes, muscle stiffness,
feeling cold, decreased sweating, thinning hair, memory impairment, joint pain, and hoarseness.
