The Great Gatsby Discussion/ Questions answered: In The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is a man on a quest. What is Gatsby’s quest? Is Gatsby’s quest a noble one? Why or why not? Are the methods he employs to achieve his goals noble? Why or why not? Cite specific examples from the book and your personal feelings or beliefs to illustrate the points in your response. 1. Jay Gatsby is on a dishonorable quest to win back the love of his life, Daisy, a married woman. For he is noble in the sense that he is searching for love and his happiness, his actions towards succeeding are far from noble. Gatsby is deceitful and obsessive over his need to win Daisy back. Gatsby boasts his wealth by throwing parties to Daisy’s liking. Now it is to say that Daisy is also at fault, for she, a married woman, falls for Gatsby and is also not noble. Gatsby is quite brilliant in a way for manipulating the way Daisy saw him by asking question about what she liked and what she did not like in order to satisfy her likings. Showing yourself as someone you’re not is not only hurtful but could lead to more problems in the future. At the end things do go wrong for Gatsby, leaving a perfect example for consequences when lying. It is better for someone to love you for who you are than who you are pretending to be. Only then will one will be truly happy. 2. Gatsby’s quest was to win back the heart of Daisy’s just like the old days. His quest was certainly not a noble one, neither was it thought out far enough. Gatsby never knew the consequences of intervening on the relationship with a married woman and then just having her leave her husband just like that. The methods weren’t noble because he thought that if he’d better himself by showing off his wealth and holding many parties, she would eventually be with him. My belief is that you should never change yourself or better yourself with material things such as money to impress someone. Always be yourself and not worry what others think such a Gatsby, because he worried about how Daisy would think of him. For example when Gatsby feared that Daisy didn’t like the parties or that she didn’t have a good time. He was always changing things for her being which led to something worse. 3. Gatsby’s quest is to get Daisy away from Tom so he could marry her. Gatsby’s quest is not noble, because he wants Daisy to leave her husband. The methods he employed were not noble. One of the methods he used was to lie about his wealth in chapter eight Gatsby admits that Daisy was to socially superior for him to marry at the time, so after a while he makes up a huge story about himself and throws huge parties so he appeared really wealthy and dignified. All that Gatsby did are against my beliefs. 1. He lusted after and had an affair with a married woman. 2. He lied about himself, so he appeared better than he really was. …
