Question Description

Milestones in the History of Women Professionals in Criminal Justice

Throughout the 1950s, society’s emphasis on the “nuclear family” promoted more “traditional” roles for women as homemakers and mothers. Many historical trends, events, milestones, and prominent figures have influenced the roles of women. For example, during periods of war, women were often allowed to take on roles more traditionally occupied by men. The famous nursing efforts of Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War and the “Rosie the Riveter” campaigns during World War II changed perceptions of women and their roles outside of the home. These large-scale impacts on gender equality in society as a whole have also influenced women’s roles in the criminal justice system.

For this Discussion, examine the “Evolutions of Female Professionals in Criminal Justice” video from this week’s resources. Select a sociohistorical event on the timeline, and consider how this event influenced the role of women professionals in criminal justice.

Post by Day 4a brief description of the socio-historical event you selected. Then explain how this event may have influenced the role of women professionals in criminal justice today. Be specific, and provide examples.
