Representation of women in online mainstream news

Due: Monday, November 7th, in hard copyin lecture.

This assignment is worth 20% of your grade (and is graded out of 20 marks).

You will conduct a small empirical research activity using the skills and ideas from the research method called ‘content analysis’, following the Coding Sheet and Coding Manual/System available from the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP).

The concept we are exploring is:  Representation of women in online mainstream news.

Using the detailed method developed by the GMMP research team, this is operationally defined as:

  1. a) visibility of women as media producers (reporters, writers, photographers, etc. relative to men; and

  1. b) visibility of women as subjects of media coverage relative to men.

(8 marks) Using the GMMP’s Internet News Coding Sheet and related Coding System Summary for Internet News — both on Blackboard –  produce a content analysis for the article provided in Blackboard’s Resources (called ‘Assignment 1 Article’).  Note that this article was found in layer two (i.e., answer to question 1 on coding sheet is ‘2’) of the Globe and Mail website. Note also that the unnamed woman mentioned on the second page of the article should be included in your coding, despite that fact that she is not named.

(12 marks) Submit a typed, 500-750 word document that briefly summarizes your findings and thoughtfully and thoroughly compares them to the GMMP’s overall findings in their Highlights document which was assigned reading for Week 6.  Does this article fit the overall findings of the GMMP’s research? Why or why not?  And, if you were a GMMP coder, would you recommend this article for additional qualitative analysis? Why or why not?
