Over the past few years, the rate of vaping has been on a gradual increase despite increased
public attention and campaigns against the use of tobacco and related products. This has
especially been evident among the youths who consider vaping to be fashionable and a better
alternative to the use of conventional cigarettes. Despite increased public attention focusing and
campaigning for the cessation f these products due to the dangers they pose to the users, the
companies behind their manufacture and distribution have marketed them as a better and safe
alternative to using as compared to conventional cigarettes. Vapes have been marketed as an
alternative product which those struggling to quit smoking can opt for. Despite this, concerns
relating to the safety and the effects of these products on the youths remain a concern to many.
This paper discusses the effects of e-cigarettes and vaping among youths with more emphasis on
economic, health, and educational impacts adopting a literature review approach.
a) Rationale
While the rate of tobacco use is on a decline, existing statistics shows that the use of electronic
cigarettes, on the over hand, is on the rise. Many health experts and marketers attribute this to the
public awareness created around e-cigarettes as being safe and effective in quitting smoking.
Companies behind these products have been at the forefront of marketing them as safe
alternatives compared to conventional tobacco cigarettes. This has created a perception within
the public that e-cigarettes and engaging in vaping is safe, rewarding, and more effective in
reducing the impact of traditional smoking than other medical interventions previously used. The
existing of these perceptions has made it hard for health experts and other stakeholders to
effectively evaluate the negative effects that these products have especially among the youths
who account for the largest number of consumers. This makes it a priority to undertake and
