Daniel Goleman, a psychologist, was the first to popularize the trait Emotional Intelligence, sometimes referred to as EI. Emotional Intelligence is a person’s capacity to be aware of her or his emotions and feelings towards others to influence their thinking and actions. The four components of EI are:

  • Self-awareness – This is your ability to read your own emotions accurately to know how your actions or lack thereof affect others.
  • Self-management – This is your ability to control or regulate your emotions and act with integrity.
  • Social-awareness – Gives you the ability to understand the needs of others and show empathy towards them.
  • Relationship management – this is your ability to communicate clearly and convincingly, reduce conflict and build strong bonds.

PLEASE RESPOND TO CLASSMATE DISCUSSION WHETHER YOU AGREE OR NOT & A DETAILED WHY: How has your emotional intelligence, or lack of emotional intelligence, positively or negatively impacted your professional or personal relationships?Emotional intelligence has impacted my work environment I would say somewhat negatively and positively. I am a very emotional person therefore self-awareness was brought to my attention by a supervisor. This was a good thing after wards because it was something that I did not know was so obvious, from frustration to sadness and happiness I can’t hid my emotions at work. So, once I was made aware of self-awareness, I began to check myself more often and make sure that my face or voice or character can’t be so obvious with an emotion I may be dealing with. This will be huge once a supervisor myself so that I can be a great leader that others look up too.

Choose ONE of the components of EI and explain how it contributes to job satisfaction.Because I am a very emotional person myself, I think I am very aware of others as well and social awareness. I can recognize when others need support or a motivational talk and help them to the best of my ability so that I can help create a positive work environment. This is something that I believe comes natural to me because I always say I would want someone to understand if I needed support.
