Should most adults take massive amounts of vitamin supplements?

Question Description

I’m working on a nutrition multi-part question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

1)The US Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that the average US adult diet consists of 47% carbohydrates, 16% protein, and 35% fats (no, these numbers add to 98% – this is close enough to 100%). Compare these numbers to the target number for each macronutrient that is listed above.

2) A person goes on a ‘carb free’ diet for 30 days, during which he eats only animal products (meat, dairy and eggs). He does not consume any sugar, anything with added sugar or any carbohydrates, other than what are naturally present in the animal products. During these 30 days, he measures the amount of glucose in his blood each day. About 20 days into his 30-day animal diet, he notices that his blood glucose levels are significantly increasing. Explain how his blood glucose levels can be increasing despite his not eating any carbohydrates for almost 3 weeks.

3) Your instructor remembers both the ‘fats are bad’ and the ‘carbs are bad’ advice from nutritional experts. Should we avoid dietary fats/oils? Should we avoid dietary carbohydrates? Explain.

4) Should most adults take massive amounts of vitamin supplements? Explain why or why not.
