The Current Topics Emphasized in These Nursing Education Journals
The three journals by Chicca, Lavoie, and Lewallen emphasize the topics of competence,
clinical reasoning, and essential clinical behaviors. Lewallen and Van Horn’s journal of The state
of the Science on Clinical Evaluation in Nursing Education emphasizes the topic of competence
by stating that it is among the most common concept examined (Lewallen & Van Horn, 2019).
Competence involves the evaluation of skills in a specific area. The journal emphasizes the topic
of clinical reasoning through the Outcome Present State (OPT) Model of Clinical Reasoning as
an evaluation method. As identified in the study, clinical reasoning is a more specific type of
critical thinking (Lewallen & Van Horn, 2019). Essential clinical behaviors described by the
article involve behaviors that determine failing or passing grades, behaviors related to safety, and
behaviors showing students’ descriptive characteristics.
