The Hero’s journey essay

As you are developing your essay writing skills, we are building on the basics–paragraph development, linearity, organization, as well as varied and well honed sentence construction and our ability to proof read and edit our work for clarity and correcting sentence level errors–but we are also deepening our thinking into subject, layering in more complexity and nuance, and learning to embrace revision as a major part of real writing: going deeper every time.

You are exploring the archetypal concept of the heroic–repeated “calls” to examine our lives and grow from one stage or life passage to another. Something is always shed in order for something new to come. You’ve done a personal heroic ritual exercise; you’ve thought about how the Hero’s Journey shows up on literature, film, and media; you’ve considered how it shows up in your own life.

Now it’s time to write your essay. We will be working on it over a couple of weeks to give you plenty of time for drafting, peer review, use of the writing lab if needed, revision, and editing.

In real life?

Post about an element of it that resonates with you.

How does the mytho-poetic concept of a Hero’s Journey resonate in your own life, your family, community, yourself? Who are your guides, mentors, helpers? Has there been a tricktster in your life? did they help or hurt you or some combination of both? What tests and trials have you faced? Are you changing from one stage to another in your life? How would you compare this with the scared mono-myth of the heroic journey?
