The influence of the media in disaster response

emerged in late 2019, from which it devastated the entire world within a few months of its
discovery. As has always been the case with disasters, the US followed a series of steps that
govern public health emergency planning and response. According to Mason et al. (2020), some
of the key areas within the disaster and emergency planning cycle include the arrival by local
responders, activation of state emergency response systems, the assessment of the damage by
governors, request of federal assistance by the states, declaration of a state of emergency by the
president, and dissemination of assistance by FEMA and other federal agencies. As the worst
global disaster in modern times, the COVID-19 received widespread coverage by local
newspapers, television, and other media.
