The question in the ‘Brexit referendum’ is ‘should the United Kingdom remain part of the European Union or leave the European Union?’

IB English Language and Campaigns Name _________________________________ Be prepared to discuss the following questions. 1. ‘Brexit’ is a word that came into common usage in advance of the referendum of June 23rd that decided whether the UK remains in or leaves the European Union. The word ‘Brexit’ merges the words Britain and Exit. Do you think the routine use of this word impacted how British citizens think about the issues, and could it have possibly influenced voting preferences? 2. The minimum age to vote in the ‘Brexit referendum’ is 18. Should citizens younger than 18 be permitted to vote in the referendum? If so, why? If not, why? 3. For the referendum, there is no minimum voter turnout required. This means that should only three people vote, and two of those who vote decide that the UK should leave the EU, this side would win. The UK has a population of about 64 million. Do the rules on minimum turnout seem fair and reasonable in your view? Explain your thinking. 4.
