Consequences of Zero Tolerance

COLLAPSE

Zero tolerance (ZT) rules require school authorities to apply foreordained results for specific infractions, paying little attention to situational setting or conditions. Outcomes are generally extreme, for example, suspension or removal from school (Losinski et al., 2014). Government law allows student expulsion for gun ownership; numerous schools and regions execute fresh zero-tolerance approaches concentrated on offenses, for example, tobacco, liquor, or drugs utilization, fighting, noncompliance, irreverence, truancy, or class interruption.

Effective use of this approach happens when execution strategies are predictable with arrangement expectation. The following are some ways in which my school implement zero tolerance:

  • Removal of students who disregard school rules. It makes a school atmosphere more conducive for learning for students.
  • Provision of ordered discipline for specific offenses. This zero tolerance expands the school discipline consistency and along these lines the clearness of the disciplinary message to students.
  • Due to the expansion of school violence at a crisis level, the school makes effective methodologies for viciousness anticipation.

In the three examples provided, I will discuss removal of disruptive students. A key supposition of the zero-tolerance approach is that the expulsion of troublesome students will bring about a more secure atmosphere for others. Even though the supposition is firmly instinctive, findings on various school atmosphere have demonstrated the contrary impact, that is, that schools with higher rates of school suspension and removal seem to have less palatable appraisals of the school atmosphere

Even though findings around this topic are deficient or boundless to legitimize solid proclamations, there has been concern that zero tolerance approaches may lead to, improve, or quicken negative emotional wellness results to youths by incrementing student alienation, uneasiness, and dismissal. Averting or treating wrongdoing and school disappointment are savvier than doing nothing or paying welfare and jail costs acquired by undereducated and estranged youth.

The Reality of School Violence

Misconceptions about Schools Being Safe Heaven

Contrary to parent perception of the American school system, the school violence have always rampant in America. The mistake that schools are safe heaven has convinced the public not to identify any problem related with violence problems in schools. The misunderstanding has diverted attention from the view of the real crisis in the public education system. The public perception and hope on the existing laws to protect the students’ welfare have failed to curb case of violence in different schools. The presence of harassment, bullying, and intimidation of students always have common in the school setting. Ideally, public relied on the legal framework to intervene on issues that impact on the education system thus people developed a misconception that school is safe heavens. Additionally, the public got trapped in self-deception to believe school provides a safe, physical and social environment of enhancing student learning and attainment of their fullest capacity. The notion that safe school environments would counter any issue and threats from violence have not effectively worked according to the majorities’ expectations of safe heavens in school.

Reasons for Parent Miss Pre-Warning Communication

Parents have developed thinking that a school is a place for teaching and learning thus should be free from crime and violence. Although acts of violence have disrupted the education process in part of United States, parents ignore pre-warnings on threats, harassments against students by underrating the probability of the event happening in school. The parent’s behavior to ignore alerts to violence in school is based on the fact that violence in American’s school has been rampant for the may year thus it is viewed as culture and norms in society (U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center, U.S. Department of education, & National Institute of Justice, 2000).

Additionally, parents are faced with dilemmas of deciding on whether communication on a threat against students is true or false. Lack of clarification and emphasis on the dangers in school occasionally results to misperceive on intended message communicated by government and school administration. From a perspective view of the parents, one can deduce that ignorance. The laxity and less effort towards school violence among the schools’ management have severally failed to protect the students. For instance, teachers may hear threats or come across student acting in threatening ways which should be taken seriously and notify the parent of the impending danger of violence.

Locals And States Boards Of Education In Addressing Threat Assessment In Secondary School Plans

Regarding addressing threats in secondary schools, the government and community have initiated a program for promoting safety in schools through the acquisition of equipment for detecting firearms and weapons. Additionally, I have learned many schools have started using trained dogs to identify illegal substances, explosives, drugs, and the gun. The department of education in the United States has initiated support for providing guidelines on existing laws that protect students from threats, violence in school. (U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center, U.S. Department of education, & National Institute of Justice, 2000).The local education agencies and board of education have called the community to create long-lasting solutions for maintaining the safe environment for all students.

The collaboration and concerted efforts of states boards of education have formulated programs for that will comprise of threat assessment guide for all schools and law enforcement departments responsible for preventing cases of violence in learning institutions. The significance of the initiative from the locals and states boards of education is that it will formulate framework and processes of investigation to identify students plotting to attack another student by students in school. Additionally, efforts to counter rampant violence in school will focus on research on weapons access and issue guidelines on the use of the arm in public. Safe storage of gun at home should be considered for limiting attackers in school.
