Hello class, after reading the article provided above about the response when Hurricane Sandy arrived, it is evident there should be more emergency training. Many to most of the nurses in the study expressed concern in the fact that they were not confident in their roles or what to do in the emergency evacuation. Not only do medical professionals lead the way during an emergency situation, but they are also expected to be fearless in their area and know exactly what to do when a dangerous situation occurs and the patients and their families need someone to look to. Families and patients look to them to lead them in what to do. As a future nurse, it is important I understand what to do in an emergency situation so that I can run myself and the patients smoothly especially while under pressure. I know for a fact I would want to be prepared for an emergency situation so that I can accurately and effectively help to save lives and hope everything runs as smoothly as possible. Upon beginning work, it would be important for me to ask and understand what to do if an emergency situation/evacuation were to occur.

To prepare for a disaster in the medical field it is one of the most challenging things to do because there are things that can be very unexpected. All types of nurses around the hospital will have all hands on deck to help in any way. As nurses we need to be ready to do whatever it takes to take care of patients. There are 6 things that may cause challenges to nurses such as lack of preparedness, newness to the disaster speciality, poor education, poor research, ethical issues. and unclear roles. ( Harthi, 2022) As I was researching I found that RedCross does online and in person classes to prevent and alleviate suffering in the result of disasters. (Redcross, 2022) It is important to also implement these educational courses in the workforce in case of any situation as well the community in case there are no healthcare workers around. I feel like reacting situations that we have had in the past into our current hospital settings will get you comfortable to be knowledgeable of the things that can happen or did happen in the past. As for different trainings there is the CERT training who educates people about disaster preparedness for any hazardous situation such as fire safety, light search, team organization, and rescue.
