  • Complete your fiction final draft, using MLA format throughout.  Make sure you:
  1. Use the 3rd-person voicethroughout, as noted in the text and on Canvas and shown in the examples.
  2. Use present tensefor discussion of the story itself, as noted in the text and on Canvas and shown in the examples.
  3. Use past tense for any discussion of historical or specific authorial references, as noted in the text and on Canvas.
  4. Create an original title.
  5. Use a standard, expository  Begin it with a “hook,” which some of the text’s student papers use, but others don’t (they’re very short).  Consider a statement, quotation, question, anecdote, or statistic to “hook” or engage the reader before you begin the introduction to the essay itself.
  6. Include in the introduction the story’s title, the author, the genre (short story, for this paper), a short, focused summary of information that will lead the reader to your thesis, and
  7. A clear, declarative thesis that then is “proven” by the body points.
  8. Transitionswithin and between paragraphs, and body points.
  9. At least one quotation and/or paraphrase for each main body point, following MLA format for quoting prose; review Purdue OWL information on how to quote dialogue, if you do quote a dialogue between characters.
  10. Re-statethe thesis and body points in the conclusion.
  11. End the essay with a thoughtful “exit” statement, which may mirror the hook or come from those same categories.  Leave the reader with a thought-provoking idea that is connected to the paper’s ideas but not just a re-statement of the thesis (you do that early in the conclusion).  The last sentence should “seal” the essay, like a mint or silky piece of chocolate at the end of a great meal.  DO NOT provide a didactic “moral of the story,” unless your paper focuses on moralistic, didactic fiction, as in an analysis of fables, myths, or parables.  Look at the student papers in the text in the fiction section for subtle ways to exit the essay.
  12. Include a Work or Works Citedpage; most students haven’t used outside works, so citing the story itself is all that’s needed.  Use the text examples, or see the Purdue OWL overview of how to cite fiction and create a Work Cited page.
  13. Use 10 or 12-pt. font, per MLA, save your essay as a Word document, and attach the file to a Discussions post with a note.
