The Vietnam War was one the most controversial and divisive events in America and was the first conflict to transcend presidential administrations. As the conflict dragged on, it became more unpopular on the homefront often being characterized in the same manner as the Civil War, “a rich man’s war, but a poor mans fight” as the bulk of the fighting was being done by the lower class and lower middle class. In addition, no president wanted to have as part of their legacy the stigma of being the first to lose a war. The following documents are speeches by Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, the two presidents under whom the bulk of the war was fought. As you read their speeches examine the reasons why they believed America was involved in the war and how they planned to end conflict. Also note what aspects of the war made it unpopular with the American public.

The committee eventually recommended impeachment charges be drawn, but Richard Nixon resigned becoming the first and only president to do so. As you review the House Judiciary Committee findings consider the seriousness of the charges and how they affected the public perception of the political structure in America.
