What does Giovanelli say is the relationship between writing and revision?

Description

Throughout the semester, we are going to keep thinking about the writing process. This class is not just about learning to create good final products, but about learning more about our own individual writing processes.

For this assignment, you should read “Strong Writing and Writers Don’t Need Revision.” It’s a very short chapter in the book Bad Ideas about Writing (Links to an external site.). Please search for, or scroll down to, the chapter, which begins on page 104.

After reading “Strong Writing and Writers Don’t Need Revision,” respond to the following questions. Your total response should be at least 300 words.

  • What does Giovanelli say is the relationship between writing and revision? Explain with specific references from the reading to show evidence of careful reading.
  • Do you think you produce better work when you revise? Why or why not?
  • On page 105, Giovanelli references Anne Lamott’s “Shitty First Drafts.” Now that you have read both Lamott’s ideas about early drafts and Giovanelli’s ideas about revision, how do you understand the relationship between shitty first drafts and revision? Are both necessary aspects of the writing process? Why or why not?
  • Think about the examples Giovanelli gives with Martin Luther King, Jr. What do you think that example shows about “final” drafts? What does it show about MLK’s attention to his audience?
  • Choose one specific idea about writing that Giovanelli shares and explain whether your own experiences as a writer support or disagree with this idea.Throughout the semester, we are going to keep thinking about the writing process.
