    16. The characters in “Brown” are identified as Puritan Christians, which means they would have been Calvinist in theology. One of the main doctrines of Calvinism is “total depravity,” which is the belief that because of the Fall, humankind is so depraved (human hearts are so totally evil) that humans do not even have the ability (or free will) to ask Christ to come into their lives. Therefore, Calvinists believe that God must elect or select individuals in order for them to be saved. This concept is called “total depravity.” Based on your reading of the story, would you say that Hawthorne agrees or disagrees with this doctrine? Explain your answer with specific reference to the story.
    17. What statement do you believe Hawthorne is making about the relationship between man and God, or about the nature of religious faith?
