Your response papers should be 1-2 pp. in length (double spaced) and should exhibit your analytical/critical engagement with the material. Every artwork (either verbal or visual) attempts to make a point, promote a position, a set of beliefs or values. Your response paper should begin by identifying one (or more) of the central premises, presuppositions, or positions of the work and then proceed to reflect on this element, expressing your agreement or disagreement with it.
Questions to ponder are:
 What elements contribute to making this work avant-garde, original, iconoclastic, offensive, revolutionary?

 What is the main problem or issue that the work is addressing?

 What is the work’s central claim, argument, or point?

 What are the formal means used to advance this claim/argument/or point? (In general, the relationship between form and content should be always something you examine when you approach avant-garde artworks).

 What assumptions is the work based upon?

 What are the strengths and weaknesses of the work?

 What are possible counterarguments to the work’s claims?

 Why are the problem(s) and the argument(s) interesting or important?

You can also choose to compare and/or contrast a text/work to another text/work we’ve studied in the course, demonstrating how they relate to each other and to the central.
