Discussion Board HN370: This week you will read chapter 12, “Children in Family Foster Care,” and Chapter 13, “The Adoption of Children,” in your text.

As you read the material I challenge you to try to imagine what it feels like to be a birth parent who has lost his/her child and is working to get that child back…

What does it feel like to be the child who is removed from the only home he/she has ever known, placed in a stranger’s home, without siblings, starting over in a new school? Maybe that child saw his/her parents get arrested and no one will tell him/her if the parents are OK. The child wants to see mom/dad and siblings but can’t. None of this makes sense to the child…no matter how abusive, that child does not know any different…

What does it feel like to be the foster parent who wants nothing more than to help children in the system? The foster parents have good intentions but the more they try to love the foster child the worse the child’s behavior becomes. Why? Can’t this child see that life is so much better now? Why doesn’t this child trust them? What does this child continue to push them away?

What does it feel like to be an adoptive parent who may go through months, even years, of home visits from case workers, school conferences to address the child’s behavioral issues, court hearings, emotional ups and downs…all of this after dealing (in many cases) with Read and post one primary post for each Discussion topic, addressing each of the topics clearly and correctly applying concepts from the course material to support answers. The length requirement for your post is 150 words minimum.

Be sure to make two or more responses to other students on each thread presenting original ideas, contributing to the quality of the discussion, and meets length requirement (50-100 words for each peer response).

There are many factors to consider when becoming a foster or adoptive parent. Imagine you are a human services professional working with clients who are in the process of becoming a foster or adoptive parent.

  • Describe how you would prepare them for having children placed in their home? (Things to consider: how to prepare their home, their families, cultural and religious differences, possible work issues)
  • What do they need to know about the children in the foster care system? (Things to consider: separated siblings, birth parents, educational and behavioral issues)
  • Identify the information you want to avoid sharing with the foster parents to safeguard confidentiality of the case.
  • What tips would you give them about how to help the child/ren feel comfortable in their home?
  • Both roles can be quite stressful. Give examples of where they can turn for support in your community.

infertility issues. Is it always “happily ever after” once an adoption is finalized?
