What more is there to a promise than a simple statement of intention?

1. How useful are thought experiments in thinking about what duties we
owe to distant needy strangers?
2. ‘When we are faced with a choice between saving the lives of the
greater number or the smaller number, the question is not whether we
should save the greater number, but why.’ Is this right?
3. EITHER (a) Does consent need to be communicated in order to create
a moral permission?
OR (b) Setting aside threats of physical violence, can verbal pressure
invalidate consent?
