What was the goal of the enslaved Africans who revolted in Louisiana in 1811?
The 1811 Slave Revolt is one of the most repressed and concealed episodes in the history
of African as well as African American peoples. The goal of the uprising was to create the Black
Republic, an independent state. Against the American forces and the local militias, more than
five hundred Africans from fifty nations speaking fifty diverse languages would battle (Largest
slave revolt in U.S. history lives on in reenactment | PBS NewsHour Weekend 2021). This
rebellion would begin in St. John the Baptist as well as St. Charles parishes, 30 miles upriver
from New Orleans. When New Orleans served as the center of what was then known as the
Orleans Terrain, it was an important city. The goal of the uprising was to take control of New
Orleans as well as establish it as the center of the new State of the United States of America.
