Would this process be likely to result in a justifiable ethical decision? Why or why not?

Question Description

If we are motivated primarily by our own self-interest, then it would make sense to conduct a cost/benefit analysis to determine whether or not to act. This might look a lot like the kind of calculation that utilitarian theory requires, but instead of considering the greater good for everyone affected by the action, we would only look out for the balance of pleasure over pain for ourselves alone.
