You can write about any context you want, once the focus is on one of the themes listed and it builds in a clear way from the initial proposal. It might help if you ask yourself the following questions as they correspond to the headings that will be used in grading your essay.

  • Have I used appropriate sources, cited them correctly and adhered to the DCU style guide throughout the essay?
  • Have I linked the essay material to lecture/tutorial material, reading list material and the forum discussions with my fellow students?
    • Have I incorporated any of themes covered by the course material we have covered after I submitted my initial proposal?
  • Have I incorporated feedback from the formative proposal? Is it clear to the reader that I have learned from the feedback?
  • Is there evidence of theoretical knowledge in this essay? Have I drawn from relevant theory to illuminate key points?
  • Have I structured the content in a way that guides the reader and addresses the key points that I want to make?
  • Is there evidence of critical thinking in this essay? Have I demonstrated an ability to bring together relevant information and go beyond merely describing it?
  • Does my essay identify clear implications regarding the content discussed? Have I identified relevant stakeholders who this essay would be of interest to?
  • Is this essay persuasive of the point of view I want to make?

Researching your topic:

I’d like you to think through your topic in light of what you have learned from the lectures/tutorials (live and recorded) and forum discussions but also through the readings you find yourself. The ability to find relevant and interesting content is one of the key skills that is assessed here. Emphasis should be placed on articles from peer-reviewed academic journals or high quality case studies in order to explore the theoretical underpinnings of the topic that you explore. It is important to remember that you will need more sources here than in the initial proposal. Projects based solely on simplistic Google searches and/or Wikipedia will most likely fail.

Projects should be no more than 2,500 words. Please be aware that the word count is not a target to hit, but a maximum number of words that you can use. Emphasis should be placed on quality rather than quantity (more killer, less filler!). You will lose marks for needless waffle so take care in editing the work. The essay should be correctly referenced, typed and should be both spell-checked and grammatically correct. Academic references MUST give the author(s), year, title, journal name, volume and page numbers. Providing a weblink alone for an academic journal article will not suffice.

* Soft copies are to be uploaded on Loop under the ‘individual assignment’ submission link by Tuesday 29/11/22 3pm. No hard copy is required.

**Any evidence of plagiarism will be dealt with according to the procedures in your student handbook. Each project must include a statement that you are aware of the University’s policy on plagiarism
