Write a Personal Statement for master application

University: Dublin Institute of Technology
degree, Bachelor of Science (Hons) Bio-Molecular Science   , a quite intense full time course.
Subjects molecular biology, immunology, analytical methods in bioscience, biochemistry, mechanisms of disease and biostatistics. All subjects passed

As part of my course I have completed a 3 months research project.
I have obtained a place in university of Navarre Spain.
Title “Expression of the facilitative glucose transporter GLUT12 in brain.”

Info regarding my project and findings.

The aim of this work was to investigate the expression of facilitative glucose transporters (GLUT) of the frontal cortex in two different models. The first part of the project investigated GLUT protein and cellular pathways (PKC, Akt and ERK) in 48 h and 5 days of hypoxia at 10% oxygen, following that the same protein and pathways were investigated in the model of depression with the knockout of melatonin receptor (MT2) and the expression of these after treatment with ketamine which is a potential antidepressant drug.

GLUT12 is a postulated secondary insulin sensitive transporter, which regulation under these conditions was the main interest as the role of GLUT12 in glucose homeostasis under normal or pathophysiological conditions is still no will known. Other transporters such as GLUT1 and GLUT3, the main transporters in the brain and GLUT4 insulin sensitive transporter were investigated. Following that to further characterize the models, pathways such as: AKT, ERK and PKC were investigated.

Data collected suggests that 24 h of hypoxia results in up regulation of GLUT transporters, whereas MT2 receptor knockout or ketamine drug have had no major effects on the protein.

Interests: piano, horse riding, I have 4 French Bulldogs and most of all science. In secondary school I have been accepted with my projects to participated in the young scientists 3 years in a row, additional in secondary school I have been in student council for 3 years. Functions: setting meetings with the principle improving the exam timetable introducing healthy vending machine or making our 1st library in the school.

To support my way through college I’ve been working for 4 years in McDonald’s, obtained a position of a leader and currently becoming a manager there.
I have been in charge of training staff and ensuring people follow procedures.

I have been also giving lessons in maths, science and piano to young children.
I have thought in B’Music school (piano). I have given there lessons in piano to young children.

I believe I am self motivated, when I set my mind on something I will do everything to achieve it, I always want to follow my dreams, dedicated, hard working, direct, dynamic, broad minded.

Why I want this master course that I am applying for?
My favourite subjects are molecular biology, immunology.
I want to stay in research and get a pHD. I have received a pHD offer in the University where I completed my 3 months project University of Navarre Spain. I am nit sure if this should be mentioned.
When I finished my thesis closed the book I felt evenly more that this is the world I belong in, long hours or experiments not working out and many literature reviews have their ups and downs.
