Attention and Perception

Attention and Perception
Human beings understandtheir environmentthrough theirsurroundings. For long, many
thought the truth was only quantified by consistent entities. However, the following experiments
show that attention and perception have the potential to change how something is regarded. The
four experiments help one to reflect on the importance of attention andperception in life and
how thataffects reality.
Reflections: My Experience and Performance in the Experiments
The Stroop Effect Test
The Stroop Effect test looks at how the test subject perceives color. It involves
bombarding the individual with words printed in different colors. The primary objective of the
trial is to show how people connect the color that is presented before them with the carrier
(word) that it manifests in. Observers tend to report the color of the ink much faster if the carrier
word if the name of the same color; as compared to when it is an alternative color. That is the

instructionsthatrequire the attention ofindividuals. These tests help the person to point out
similarities in the subject matter consistently. For instance, a visual target (‘redness’) is noted
faster if there are two replications of the same color; that is a red dot with the name red written
beside it (Eidels, Townsend & Algom, 2009).
The Selective Attention Test
The Selective Attention Test is an interesting test. Itdemonstratedto me that
concentrating on something can numb outother senses. Selective Attention isa technique that
