I chose an article about recovery for children in the foster system with attachment disorders and mental health issues. This is the patient population I work with daily. The study highlighted the “complex and non-linear development” of children in foster care with mental health disorders (Turner et al., 2022). While we know that foster care is better than care in a residential facility there is limited research on the effect on the actual mental health disorders. For many children foster care can be multiple moves and sometimes less than ideal placements. One can assume this may add to a child’s trauma. However, this study looks at those who find themselves in a committed home and the ages at which this occurs. It was found that infants tend to adjust and do better than older kids. This could be due to mistreatment or simply caregiver fatigue. For children with mental illness, there is a need for skills beyond that of typical parenting. Often these caregivers have to learn how to approach and talk with the child. Sometimes these parents must act as therapists in a way to help the child adjust and thrive. There were flaws in this study and it is the only one of its kind to date. However, I am happy this issue is getting some attention.

Explain any difficulties you experienced while searching for this article.

The Walden library search is a multi-database search tool which makes it very beneficial (Walden University, 2020). One must be incredibly careful when searching to make sure the filters are set to only allow peer-reviewed articles. They also must be set to show only those in languages you understand. I did find it rather easy to locate the information I wanted to read. However, I remember the first time I used a database like Walden’s. I went to a sister school of sorts, and I really struggled with using the resources. Now I am amazingly comfortable with the system now. I used the library platform which directed me to Elsevier

Would this database be useful to your colleagues? Explain why or why not.

The database is extremely helpful. There has been an increase in platforms where one can find peer-reviewed content however many are misleading. “A thriving peer review system is expected to be efficient, rigorous, fair, inclusive of diverse perspectives, responsive to the needs of its stakeholders, and as transparent as possible” (Lugosi, 2021). The beauty of the Walden library is that much of the content can be trusted. The ability to filter through and select everything even down to the year is invaluable. I do believe there are some areas that could lead someone astray but for the most part, the database and platform are very user-friendly and useful.

Would you recommend this database? Explain why or why not.

I would highly recommend the database. Due to the library platform being a multi-database search it is quick and efficient. The library platform is extremely easy to use and the database it led me to is one of the leading names in education. As I said above there are some flaws but once someone is familiar with the system and knows what they are looking for in terms of content the database and library platform is perfect.
