Conservatism, Liberalism, and Nationalism Assignment Instructions

Overview

As the journey to better understand different ideologies and ways in which they turn idolatrous begins, we unpack the first three sets of coherent ideas about society and government explored in the course: conservatism, liberalism, and nationalism.  This research paper assignment allows you to compare and contrast the three and identify those core ideas of each that attract misdirected worship.  Further theoretical applications include asking whether moderate forms of nationalism are possible.  Finally, to the extent that Scripture lays out a model of statesmanship and government, which of its elements overlap with the features that conservatism, liberalism, and nationalism emphasizes?  Is one of these ideologies more in line with Biblical politics, or do all three speak to that paradigm in different ways?

In the paper, discuss the following:

• Compare and contrast classical liberalism, modern liberalism, and conservatism
• Evaluate the pros and cons of nationalism
• Evaluate the impact of the above ideologies in American policy and politics
• Synthesize the above within a model of Biblical principles of statesmanship and government

Practical applications of this assignment involve evaluating the impact of the above ideologies in American policy and politics.  On issues that range from taxes, to different frameworks of healthcare insurance and provision, to debates surrounding policing, incarceration, and drug policy, this paper will provide you with the tools to better identify the ideological assumptions that a given policy makes.  And the assessment of how ideologies fit into a Scriptural framework will help you, as a Christian, consider your posture in relation to specific tools available in government and the broad assumptions that underlie their use.
