Socialism, Marxism, and Critical Theory Assignment Instructions

This paper allows you to delve deeper into additional ideologies usually considered later in time (although they have antecedents going back to Plato if not before): socialism, Marxism, and critical theory.  The exercise is valuable theoretically insofar as terms describing these political and social ideas are often used interchangeably, without attention to the subtle but significant differences among them.  But is it socialism, or Marxism, that insists on the necessity of violence before the transition to the classless society?  Was it Marxism, or Critical Theory, that motivated 1960’s attempts to regulate speech in the name of political correctness?  As before, this assignment asks you to compare and contrast three ideologies and identify components elevated by adherents to the status of idols.  Further theoretical applications include asking whether “systemic injustice” and “structural inequality” are concepts that make sense.  Finally, is any overlap possible with Scripture, given that all three of these ideologies, to a significant extent, endorse economic collectivism?

In the paper, discuss the following:

  • Synthesize the key ideas of socialism, Marxism and Critical Theory
  • Evaluate the impacts of Socialism, Marxism and critical theory on American politics and policy
  • Evaluate the above within a model of Biblical principles of statesmanship and government

Practical applications involve assessing the influence of these systems of thought in American policy and politics – a task that has become more timely and urgent.  Is a growing provision by the state of public services in the 20th century necessarily socialist?  What strategies in evidence at universities and in the media originated in critical theory?  How are Christians to engage with those upholding these ideas in the public square?  More fundamentally, in light of the Benedict option proposed in response to the rejection of objective truth in socialism, Marxism, and Critical Theory, which occurs to a far greater extent than is the case in modern liberalism: are Christians to engage at all?

Instructions

Write 12-14 pages of content, double-spaced, thoroughly addressing all aspects of the question prompt.  Remember that as per posted guidelines, your paper must include citations from relevant readings, presentations, and at least 20 scholarly sources.  It is not unusual, in doctoral-level research, to have 3-4 citations per paragraph.  Remember also that writing a research paper, especially at the doctoral level, requires the student to weave in ideas from numerous sources and then in turn synthesize those ideas to create fresh insights and knowledge. Current APA citation format is required.
