First of all, for any type of journal article your critique should include some basic information: Name(s) of the author(s) 2. Title of article 3. Title of journal, volume number, date, month and page numbers.

The questions below are SUGGESTIONS for your essay. The assignment is to identify the main thesis / argument of the article you choose and explain how the author has proved or failed to prove

  1. What is the author’s thesis / argument?
  2. Is the purpose of the article made clear in the introduction?
  3. Did the author provide convincing evidence to support the thesis? If yes, then provide an example and explain why it was convincing. If no, then provide an example and explain why it wasn’t convincing.
  4. Do you find errors of fact and interpretation? (This is a good one! You won’t believe how often authors misinterpret or misrepresent the work of others. You can check on this by looking up for yourself the references the author cites.)
  5. Have any ideas been overemphasized or underemphasized? Suggest specific revisions.
  6. What underlying assumptions does the author have?
  7. Has the author been objective in his or her discussion of the topic?
  8. Did the author provide convincing evidence to support the thesis? If yes, then provide an example and explain why it was convincing. If no, then provide an example and explain why it wasn’t convincing.
  9. Does the author use quotations to bolster the thesis? Provide an example.
