Movie Review Extra Credit Assignment (up to 10 extra credit points)

You’ve gotten to know me a bit from my video lectures this semester. Now this extra credit assignment is my opportunity to get to know you a bit better. For this extra credit assignment, should you choose to pursue it, you will need to pick one of the films from this list below to first view and then upload a 5 minute movie review (make sure you verify the year to be sure you have selected the correct version of the film):

Paris Is Burning (1990)

Milk (2008)

United in Anger: A History of ACT UP (2012)

Tongues Untied (1989)

Boy Erased (2018)

In order to receive credit for this assignment you must first view the selected film in its entirety, then you must record yourself giving a brief (about 5 minutes total) movie review. The movie review recording should follow the following outline:

  1. First introduce yourself. State your full name clearly and say something memorable about yourself, perhaps why you are taking the class, what you hope to do for a career someday, or what you have enjoyed or disliked most about the course so far. Keep it simple and quick.
  2. Tell me what movie you picked.
  3. Give a brief summary of the movie. Provide a quick overview of the movie or documentary (plot, main characters, and what the main points of the storyline were).
  4. Explain how the movie is relevant to this class. Take a theme from the movie and tie it back to a concept or something you have learned from PH 353 so far. Explain why the concept or theme is important.
  5. Give the movie a rating on a 0-10 point scale. Would you recommend it, why or why not.

You will need to upload a movie review video covering all 5 of the above parts in order to receive full credit. Do not worry, no one will view your movie review except for me (Dr. Storholm) and/or our class TA Allison. If you would prefer not to submit a video review you may also submit a written movie review but please be sure to cover all 5 points above. Written reviews must be uploaded as a Microsoft Word document and can be no less than 3 double spaced pages (Times New Roman; 12-point font). Have fun!!
