The importance of following policy and procedure as it relates to testing integrity.

Nursing care is held to a high standard of quality by adhering to a set of ethical principles

and norms ingrained in the nursing profession. Altruism, autonomy, human dignity, honesty, and

social justice are among the fundamental values of nursing. The human and spiritual viewpoint

inherent in nursing is mirrored in the profession’s core ethical values, broadly supported by

worldwide society. Students’ work has become increasingly questionable over the last decade

due to a shift away from traditional in-class writing tests and an increase in the number of

available internet resources. The subject has become a global priority for institutes of higher

education. Nursing was required to adhere to the ICN Code of Ethics for Nurses and the ICN

Code of Conduct for Nurses, both of which are founded on the same fundamental ideals of

honesty and integrity (Manning, 2020). The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate why nursing

education institutions and organizations must adhere to testing integrity policies and procedures.

Academic Dishonesty

Academic integrity is exemplified by intellectual honesty, fairness, respect, trust, and

accountability. According to Bretag(2018), academic dishonesty is defined as dishonest practices

to acquire an unfair advantage in the classroom, whether done purposefully or unintentionally.

Plagiarism and collusion are the most prevalent forms of academic dishonesty (Bretag, 2018).

Academic dishonesty is not a new occurrence in higher education. The phenomenon has been

extensively studied in academic papers and books for decades. The first rule of writing is that

one should never pass off another’s work as their own and that whatever they write should be

original. It is advisable to be proactive rather than reactive regarding academic integrity. In other

words, educators do not intend to intervene until after an instance of academic dishonesty occurs.
