The objective of this assignment is to examine the United Nation’s effort to address global development issues and share this with your colleagues. The Millennium Development Goals began first as a campaign to draw the world’s countries and development institutions’ attention to poverty in the developing world. It evolved into an action plan under an advisory panel led by Professor Jeffrey Sachs of Harvard. This global action plan called on the world to: “reduce extreme poverty, empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, halt the spread of HIV/AIDs, malaria, and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability, and develop a global partnership for development.” The target date for meeting the MDGs was 2015.

In 2013, the United Nations began an effort to design a development program for the post-MDGs world. Through a series of open working groups (with representatives from over 70 countries), “global conversations,” and surveys the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were born. The SDGs encompass 17 goals. The target for the SDGs is 2030, referred to as Agenda 2030.

For this assignment, you will research the Sustainable Development Goal you were assigned in class and answer the questions below.

Questions to be addressed in your paper:

1. What is the number and title of the goal you were assigned?
2. What are the targets of your goal? (Please note your goal may only have one (1)).
3. What progress has the SDG made towards Agenda 2030?
4. What are some of the challenges in meeting this goal?
5. Pick a nation-state in the developing world and briefly discuss the SDGs’ progress in your nation-state.
