The Mesopotamian Religious Belief System
Mesopotamians had a strong connection to their religion. They believed in divinity and
believed that it had an effect on human life. They were polytheists given that they believed in
worshipping several gods. They had seven main gods and several other small gods (Root, 2018).
The main gods were An who was also known as Anu and, Ilu, in other tribes and was the main
god who are credited with creation, Enlil who would later be called Ellil was in charge of natural
occurrences such as the wind and storms. Enki who later became Ea was the god of the
freshwater ocean and was also in charge of wisdom and magic as well as the arts, Ninhursag who
was the wife of Ea was also known as Damgalnuna, Nanna was believed to be the moon which is
