THE MISEMONO SHOW HISTORY REPORT
The Edo Period, which ran from 17th century to early 19th century, was a crucial
time for Japan to build itself up after the bloodshed and instability of the Sengoku
Period. Japan, during this time, isolated itself from foreign policies and relations to
focus on its own affairs. The Edo Period was characterized by economic growth,
urbanization and population stability, a strict and peaceful social order, and an
enjoyment of pop culture and the arts. The changes of Japan and the careful curation
of a peaceful country led to the popularity of bizarre and ominous exhibits and
shows.
Misemono Shows, as described by Markus in his paper “The Carnival of Edo:
Misemono Spectacles from Contemporary Accounts”, are private exhibitions of
unusual items, individuals, or skills in a temporary enclosure (501). These are low–
cost and low–maintenance shows that are located in high–traffic areas to attract
passers–by. Although the shows appear to be second–rate in nature, the exhibitions
attract many visitors due to the rarity and surrealism of its exhibits, and especially
