Two challenges that are related to adequate health care in countries is nutrition and prevention (vaccines, medications). In order to have good health one must have good nutrition. Most countries do not have adequate food let alone any nutritious foods. In the United States we have such an abundance of food, in fact according to the Washington Post, the United States wastes over $160 billion dollars in food each year. I believe some of this waste should be resourced to other countries. Global nurses can educate patients on the right foods to choose. This is turn will also help prevent chronic diseases later down the road. For prevention, there are Universities throughout the United States that are provided with grants by the Federal government for research, these universities in turn are using the grants to study diseases and prevention practices (such as vaccines) in more detail throughout the world. The University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate school is currently committed to a project what they have titled “Cura Zika”. With cases of the Zika virus on the rise, students from the graduate school are using their knowledge and research to help develop prevention practices and maybe one day a cure. I believe one strategy for nurses to use in advocating for health care at a global level is creating power by numbers. The more nurses we have worldwide, the better care that patients are going to receive. Groups like the International Council of Nurses believe that health care is a basic human right and encourage the growth of current nurses and the creation of new ones. University of Pittsburgh.
